Making Money With Blogs: Create Your Blog

So you have your keyword, now what?

Now we get down and dirty. It's blog making time.

Making Money With Blogs Step 2a:

Go to blogger.com. Click on "Create Your Blog Now".

For the "Blog Title", you want to use your keyword. In our example, we were using the keyword "bcs college football rankings". So I would name my blog "bcs college football rankings".

For the URL, you want to use the same keyword if possible. If, in this example, bcscollegefootballrankings.blogspot.com is taken, we try variations of the keyword like bcs-collegefootballrankings.blogspot.com. Use hyphens (-) if necessary to get your keyword.

Making Money With Blogs Step 2b:

Choose a template. It has been tested by many bloggers, and it appears that a white background with black or dark gray letters works very well for Adsense oriented blogs. "Minima" is an excellent template for our purpose. Click continue and your blog is created. Click on "start blogging".

Making Money With Blogs Step 2c:

Next, click on the "settings" tab. Under settings, click on the "formatting" link. Change the first section from Show "7" to Show "1" post. Click on "save settings" at the bottom of the page.

Next, click on "comments" and then change (near the middle of the page) Backlinks from "hide" to "show". Now "save settings" at the bottom of the page.

Making Money With Blogs Step 2d:

Now, you can experiment with your layout colors. Click on the "layout" tab, then click on "fonts and colors". Play with the colors and see what you can come up with that you like. We are almost done!

Making Money With Blogs Step 2e:

Click on "Posting". This will be your first blog post.

For the title, you need to use the keyword. If you want, you can add a few words to it, but the less the better down the road. Your keyword needs to be used in this title though, no exceptions.

Then you want to write a post that tells about your blog and what information its going to bring to its readers. This post should be about 200 words or less, and you should use your keyword in this post 2 to 3 times. Once complete, click "publish post" and its done! Your first blog.

Next in our Making Money With Blogs series, we explain how to edit your layout, add your adsense ads, and start making some money!

Making Money With Blogs: Find Your Niche

To earn Google adsense money, we must first start at the beginning. Making money with blogs isn't difficult, but making an acceptable amount of money can be.

Making Money with Blogs Step 1a:

The single most important step in making Google adsense money through your blog is your blog's "niche", or topic. How do you create a blog that is going to get the traffic you need to generate the money you desire? Find out what's HOT. There are two sites I usually browse to find out what are the current hot topics on the internet.
  1. Google Trends (http://www.google.com/trends) This tool gives you a list of all of the current hot topics on the net, with updates every few minutes. Great tool to find your blog ideas and topics.
  2. Yahoo Buzz (http://buzz.yahoo.com/) This is another tool that shows you the hottest news stories and topics for the day.
Both of those tools are very useful.

Once you have a list of at least 5 hot topics, continue on.

Making Money with Blogs Step 1b:

Now you have your 5 topics. Next, we need to eliminate the topics that are going to prove to be too competitive and a waste of time. What we do next is find what keywords are going to drive the traffic to your blog. To find this, we need to use Google Adwords keyword tool. Let's use college football as an example.

We see that "bcs rankings" is very hot now, according to Google Trends. So what we need to do is, find some keywords that have a high search volume, but not many supporting pages. How do we do this? Using the keyword tool, we search with that topic.

Google gives us the following results:

Making Money with Blogs Step 1c:

Now we take the top 8 results, and go to www.google.com and search for those keywords. It is important that you search for those keywords with quotation marks around the term, this will give us only the exact matches for those terms which is what we want.

What you are looking for is a search-to-results ratio of less than 30. To get this ratio, we take the number of pages google shows for the keyword (with quotes around it), and divide it by the number of searches each month.

Once we have narrowed it down to keywords with only a ratio of less than 30, we look for the keyword that has the least amount of google page results. And I believe with this topic, we have found a short term gold mine with keyword: bcs college football rankings

This keyword is your golden ticket to Making Money with Blogs.

Stay tuned for the next steps as we continue on our way to Making Money With Blogs.
